It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary Esther (McWhorter) Nolin who passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2025, at the age of 97. Known to most as “Esther” she was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend.
Esther was born on June 12, 1927, in Clayton, Alabama. She grew up one of nine children born to Eunice and Marion McWhorter who worked as sharecroppers. As a young girl, she moved a few times with her family, within the Barbour Co. area. In her twenties, Esther was employed by the phone company in Clayton, Alabama where she would eventually meet her future husband after getting to know him while working the switchboard. In1955, she would marry her husband, Huey Nolin of Eufaula, Alabama and would have their first child in Alabama while Huey finished earning his degree in Education. Two years later they moved to Southern California where they had three more children and established their home for the next 31 years.
Following Huey’s retirement from Education in California, they returned to Alabama and settled in Louisville to live out those “Golden Years”!
Esther lived a full life with a passion for family, cooking and baking (her southern down-home cooking was a highlight for family and friends)! She also loved being outdoors tending to her plants and gardens, doing stitchery, making dolls and jewelry Christmas trees. Esther was a kind and generous person and will be remembered for her immense strength, her warm smile and witty personality.
Esther is preceded in death by her husband, Huey P. Nolin (2012) and sons: John P. Nolin (1986) and Benjamin C. Nolin (1998). She is survived by her remaining children: Charles D. Nolin (Vickie), Lisa (Nolin) Hancock; grandchildren: Stacy Vanasdale, Jessie Maddox (Jesse), Sara Hancock, Matt Nolin (Becks) and Mandy (Nolin) Jarrell (Brandon); great grandchildren: Soccoro and Xavier Vanasdale, Alivia and Zara Maddox, Hope Hancock, Addi Nolin and Penelope Grant (Jarrell), Skyler, Preston, Tanner and Houston Jarrell as well as many extended family members and friends.
We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the overwhelming love, care and kindness provided to our Mom by the amazing staff (past and present) at Carillon Oaks, Heflin Alabama. Words cannot express our gratitude and your humanity will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace dear Mom…the fight is over. We love you so much, we will always treasure our time and memories with you and will keep you in our hearts forever.
