FROM SEVENTEEN TO EIGHT

Eufaula High School junior Yhonzae Pierre has gotten the attention of many Division I college football coaches, including Alabama’s Coach Nick Saban who made a recruiting visit to the defensive standout last week in Eufaula. Pierre is the son of Larry and Sharonda Pierre of Eufaula.

Lady Jags split Class 1A

The Barbour County High Lady Jaguars split their two Class 1A Area 6 games last week falling on the road Wednesday to the Loachapoka Lady Indians 60-35, but bounced back at home Friday night to beat the Notasulga Lady Blue Devils 51-15. With the win the girls improved to 4-12 overall and 2-1 in area play.

Showcase Winners

TOURNAMENT WINNERS - The Eufaula High School Junior Varsity girls are champions of the Eufaula Showcase, which took place Saturday, January 15. Pictured on the front row are Tamiaya Deloach, Nyla Green, Jalerra Glover and Quannesia Walton. On the back row, manager Kiki Palmer, Azahria Dennis, Arianna Turner, Coach Rodney Lewis, Mah’Siya Jerrnigan and Heavan Duckworth. The team defeated Enterprise High School JV girls 34-22 in the first round Saturday morning and Central High School JV girls 33-27 in the championship that afternoon. The Lady Tigers were led by Walton with 19 points over Enterprise and by Duckworth with 13 points over Central.

Eagles Sweep Jaguars

The Barbour County High Jaguars were swept by the Carroll High Eagles in all three games last Tuesday at home with the Varsity falling 88-37, the Lady Jags 58-50 and the Junior Varsity 60-11. With the loss the Varsity fell to 0-13 on the season.

Hunters feed the hungry

Barbour County hunters have the opportunity to help fight hunger by donating their deer this season. More than a half-million pounds of venison has been donated to food banks across the state since 1999 through Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH), a program coordinated by the Alabama Conservation and Natural Resource Foundation.

Barbour County bucks in rut

BROWN RIDGE - Barry Brown (right), pictured with his son Zack, dropped this 19-point buck near Clayton on January 16. The trophy deer has 10 points on the main frame, split brow tines and a drop tine with “trash” to equal 19 points. His wife Kim said, “He lets a many walk, but not this afternoon.” The rut is anticipated to continue into the last week of January in Barbour County, and deer season ends on February 10.

Lady Jags win area matchup

The Barbour County High Lady Jaguar basketball team got a big win Thursday night opening Class 1A Area 6 play with a 42-23 road win over the Notasulga Lady Blue Devils. Freshman center Anesia Eutsey had a double double to lead the team with 23 points and 10 rebounds.
