The Eufaula Tigers captured the 6A Area 4 championship Thursday night, February 10 by defeating the Valley Rams by a score of 82-50. The game was played in Valley’s gymnasium.
The Barbour County High Lady Jaguars got a big Class 1A Area 6 win over the Central-Hayneville Lions last Monday night at home 56-35 to finish in second place. They lost to the Pike County Lady Bulldogs at home Tuesday 64-37 but got a big road win against the Russell County Lady Warriors Thursday on the road to close out the regular season 40-37.
Jordan Smith, an outstanding football player at Ariton High School, finished his junior year with 1,851 yards rushing and 28 rushing touchdowns. Even with those statistics, at the beginning of February Smith was not rated by any major recruiting outlet and had no visits planned.
The Barbour County High Lady Jaguars got a big Class 1A Area 6 win Friday night on the road defeating the Central-Hayneville Lady Lions 58-30. They also lost an area game at home Monday to the Loachapoka Lady Indians 51-44 and Tuesday to the Carroll High Lady Eagles 52-46. With the win, the girls improved to 5-14 overall and 3-2 in area play. Freshman forward Tamia Peterson had a big game with a double double scoring 16 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Anesia Eutsey also had a double double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Enasia Ivory also had 12 points, Brakiah Russell 8, Aaliyah Peterson 7, ZyQuoya Devose 2 and ZyPrestiny Patterson 1.
The EHS varsity boys basketball team (24-3) picked up three more wins last week against Enterprise 60-51 on Tuesday, Abbeville 74-38 on Friday and Carroll 76-60 on Saturday. Over Enterprise, Justin Davis had 15 points followed by Josh Paige and Patrick Screws with 14 each. Over Abbeville, Paige had 19 points; Screws, 14 points, 11 rebounds; Rashaad Frye, 13 points; and Jaylen Guilford, 10 rebounds. Over Carroll, T. Coleman Jr had 17 points; Davis, 15 points, 9 rebounds; Screws, 12 points; Yhonzae Pierre, 10 points, 8 rebounds; Jalen Coleman, 10 points; and Frye, 12 rebounds. The Tigers will play Russell County on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 4:00 p.m. in the first round of the 6A Area 4 tournament.
The ACA varsity teams finish the regular season both in second place in their area, securing a trip to the AISA Class 1A state playoffs. The Varsity girls went 4-1 last week defeating Emmanuel 70-35 on Monday, falling to Evangel 46-32 on Tuesday, defeating Crenshaw Christian 69-28 on Thursday, defeating Macon East 65-49 on Friday and defeating Crenshaw Christian 51-19 on Saturday. The varsity boys went 3-2 last week defeating Emmanuel 57-51, falling to Evangel 48-23, defeating Crenshaw 82-64, falling to Macon East 62-59 and defeating Crenshaw 62-54.
1,000 POINT CLUB - Cousins emmaline Hughes and Makenna Long both scored their 1,000th point during g.w. Long’s road win over rival ariton on Friday night, January 21. the two seniors have been starters on varsity since the eighth grade and have been instrumental in two basketball final four appearances. Both have also contributed to numerous volleyball and softball state championship teams. Long was also recently selected as the Bryant Jordan scholar athlete nominee to represent Class 2a area 3. Coached by Jody Hughes (Hughes’ dad and Long’s uncle), the Lady rebels improved to 18-3 after their 55-23 win over ariton on Friday night, January 28.
The Purple Cat crowd rushed the court Friday night in Skipperville when Ariton’s varsity boys basketball team defeated rival G.W. Long by one point in the regular season finale. A tip-in by junior Paxton Steed put Ariton ahead with less than a second remaining. With the 50-49 victory, Ariton (19-4) secures first place in AHSAA 2A Area 3 with a 6-0 region record. Long (11-11) finishes second in 2A Area 3 with a 4-2 region record, both area losses at the hands of the Purple Cats.
The Eufaula High School basketball teams wrapped up area play last week with three straight wins each. The Lady Tigers (16-7) are the undisputed champions of 6A Area 4 with a 6-0 regional record. The varsity boys (21-3) are second in the state in Class 6A and second in 6A Area 4 with a 4-2 region record including losses to Valley and Opelika earlier this month.
