The streak is over!!! When the final whistle blew it was a scene of celebration for the Barbour County High School Jaguars, who finally broke that long streak of on the field victories with a come from behind 12-6 win over the Calhoun Tigers.
The first game of the 2023 football season didn’t go well for class 5A Eufaula as they lost 63-14 to class 7A Enterprise at Wildcat Stadium. Before the game, Enterprise held a ceremony designating the Field “Bill Bacon Field” in honor of the former coach from 1974 to 2000, that led two state championship teams in 1979 and 1982. Eufaula received the opening kickoff and picked up two first downs before turning the ball over to Enterprise at the Eufaula 22 yard line. Enterprise took advantage of the short field and scored a touchdown on their 5th play, a 3 yard run by Senior running back, Kalon Dunlap, who is committed to play college football at the University of Indiana. The 2 point conversion was good and the score with 7:17 to go in the 1st quarter was 8-0.
The Barbour County High Lady Jaguar Volleyball team will have new coaches this season as they start the 2023 campaign. John Douglas will be head coach replacing Jamie Garrett and Jim Bush will be assistant coach. They will also coach girls basketball this year.
The Barbour County High School Jaguar football team is busy preparing for the upcoming 2023 season with the theme 'Next Man Up.' They will also be under new leadership this season with a new head coach and assistant coaches. Derrick Levett takes over for Daniel Powell as head coach for the Jaguars.
The Lakeside Varsity Chiefs started the 2023-2024 football season under the leadership of a new head football coach, Buck McDonald. Coach McDonald who took over the rein of the Eufaula program, competes in the Alabama Independent School Association (AISHA) in Class A Region 1.
Former Super Bowl champion and former Eufaula High School graduate Jerrell Jernigan will be leading the Eufaula High School Tigers for his second season as head coach. He was named head football coach for the Tigers in June of 2022.
All-Star Sports Week was held last week with several local and Wiremanss players participating. The AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association) sponsored the event with rising senior athletes competing in several sporting events.
The Barbour County State Lake on County Road 49 has been vacated for fishermen to enjoy outings since August 3, 2020. Three years later the 75-acre lake remains closed with no projected date set for its reopening.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) All-Star Sports Week is going on now July 17-21 at the Renaissance Montgomery Convention Center in Montgomery. Coaches from all over Alabama and other states come for the Coaching Clinics, Rules Clinics, All-Star Games, Coaches Championship Awards Banquet, Athletic Directors & Principals Meetings, Sportsmanship Luncheon and other events.
The Barbour County High Jaguar boys basketball team traveled to Tallahassee, Florida to compete in the Florida State University Seminoles Team Basketball Summer Camp.recently. They finished with a record of 3-3.
