For the first time since 2006, Eufaula will play in the state semi-finals. Eufaula, one of only four teams remaining in the Class 5A playoffs, will travel this week to Gulf Shores to take on the Dolphins. They made it there by coming from behind to defeat Demopolis by a score of 20-17. It was the first road playoff game for the Tigers this season, coming at a challenging time with students being out of school for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Barbour County High Lady Jaguar volleyball team ended the season falling to the G.W. Long Lady Rebels 25-4, 25-5, 25-1 in the semi-finals of the Class 2A, Area 4 Tournament held in Skipperville.
The Barbour County High Jaguar boys varsity basketball team fell to the Charles Henderson Trojans 62-28 in the Dothan Turkey Classic Play-In Tournament last Monday at the Dothan Civic Center. It was a single elimination tournament and the Jaguars fell to 0-3 with the loss.
The Lakeside Lady Chiefs defeated Southland Academy Tuesday, November 21, by one point. The Chiefs won by a score of 49-48 on the final day of the Terrell Academy Tournament.
Eufaula scored early and often in their first round playoff game last Thursday against the Shelby County Wildcats. The Tigers scored 62 points in the first 17 minutes, ultimately winning by the final score of 6519.
The Barbour County Junior High Jaguar boys basketball team got their first win of the year defeating the Abbeville Junior Yellow Jackets 38-31 at home. They also lost to Pike County 42-31, Ariton 32-22, G.W. Long 3024 in overtime and Abbeville 42-32. They are now 1-6 on the season.
The Barbour County High Jaguars are busy preparing for the 2023-24 basketball season and at press time were hosting the Ashford High Yellow Jackets on Tuesday and hosting rival Bullock County on Friday. Tip-off for both games is at 4:30. The Jaguars will have new coaches this year as Leon Douglas will be over the boys and his brother John Douglas will take over the girls. Leon, a former University of Alabama star and NBA player, was a two-time SEC Player of the Year for the Crimson Tide in the 1970's and played seven seasons in the NBA. He was later a college men's head basketball coach with successful stops at Stillman College, Tuskegee University and Miles University. He last coached on the high school level at Cordova in 2019. Long time BCHS head coach Raymond White will assist him.
KEVIN HELMS The Lakeside Lady Chiefs kicked off their basketball season in Montgomery at the Evangel Christian Tournament. In a rematch from last year’s ASIA Final Four both teams played a very exciting game ending with Lakeside winning 40-38 over Hooper Academy.
