VARSITY GIRLS The Lakeside Varsity Girls were defeated by Terrell Academy by a score of 48-30 on Thursday, December 28. Chloe Helms led the Lady Chiefs with 10 Dylin White score 9 points and hit 5 of 6 freethrows.
The Barbour County High School Varsity boys basketball team dropped two games to start the new year falling to the Ariton Purple Cats on the road Thursday 60-44 in a Class 2A, Area 3 contest and at the Bullock County Hornets on Saturday 7453. They are now 1-15 overall and 0-1 in area play.
The Barbour County Junior High boys basketball team participated in the Thelma's Kitchen Lake City Classic Tournament hosted by Eufaula High School dropping all five games and finishing in fourth place.
The Barbour County High Jaguar boys Varsity team dropped all three games last week falling to the Charles Henderson Trojans on Tuesday at home 7665, to the Tallassee Tigers on the road Thursday 71-60 and to the Eufaula Tigers Saturday on the road 68-39. They are now 0-7 on the year.
The Barbour County Junior High Jaguar basketball teams completed their regular season against the South Highland Hornets with the boys winning 16-14 and the girls falling 31-17 last Monday in Clayton.
Jerrel Jernigan, coach at Eufaula High School, has been named Coach of the Year in 5A by the Alabama Football Coaches Association. Coach Jernigan, along with the other coaches selected from each Class, will be honored at the ALFCA Coach of the Year Luncheon on January 27, 2024, at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montgomery. Jernigan led the 2023 Eufaula Tigers to the Class 5A semifinals this season for the first time since 2006.
The Barbour County High Jaguar varsity boys basketball team fell on the road last Tuesday to the Charles Henderson Trojans 74-32. The Junior Varsity lost 42-9 and the Lady Jaguars 56-29.
For the first time since 2006 the Eufaula Tigers made it to the fourth round of the Alabama High School Football playoffs. This time, however, the Tigers came up short of the championship game. In what most thought would be a rebuilding year, Eufaula won 10 games and exceeded expectations. After winning a close game last week in Demopolis, Eufaula traveled to Gulf Shores on Friday to take on the top ranked and undefeated Dolphins. Gulf Shores came into the game averaging nearly 40 points per game on the season, while surrendering just 9.5, with most of those points coming in the late stages of games whenever the outcome had already been decided. The Dolphin defense proved to be formidable as they held the Tigers scoreless for the first time this year. The Dolphins defense is led by former Atlanta Falcons and Auburn University Defensive Coordinator, Brian Van Gorder.
