My dear, 'little' daughter turned ten years old this week. Amid the blinding crush of activity that surrounds this time of the year - as my spouse and I meticulously planned Rebekah's birthday party with the kind of dedication reserved for a Queen's butler - I considered writing a column about quaint birthday traditions of the past. However, as my daughter opened her birthday presents and cut into her fat chocolate cake - as I glanced around at all the party guests, the party favors, the lavish party decorations - I was struck with a shocking revelation … Does Rebekah view the birthday traditions from my childhood as antiquated? Archaic even?

75 YEARS AGO AUGUST 4, 1950 Con. George Andrews of the 3rd Alabama District has announced the appointment of James (Tubby) Daniel Jr., of Clayton, as principal candidate to the United States Military Academy for the class of 1955. The class begins in July 1951. Tubby has just finished his high school studies at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., where he excelled in scholastics and athletics. During the next year he will continue his studies in preparation for the course at West Point.

A county courthouse is the centerpiece in most counties where the structure is a focal point of the county seat. Whether the county government offices are located in a newer courthouse or whether it is a restored historical structure, courthouses are located in the center of town often with traffic circling the building.
