I want to ask you about the condition of the world. The news on television, online, in social media, and in the paper show terrible things every day. I see evil, corruption, tragedy, and destruction. We have wars and famine and terrorism in our world. Thousands of people have died in massive earthquakes and natural disasters. There seems to be no peace in store for the Middle East. Even in our own country and state, we constantly see school shootings and people living without moral restraints. Now, the death of Charlie Kirk points to how bad society has become. All these things are very disheartening. Are these signs that we are in a downward spiral? Are we seeing the end of the world at hand? What does the Bible say about these issues?
When my daughter was very little, she would get cross at the Confederate roses blooming in my Mama's backyard. No matter how we tried, we couldn't make our indignant toddler understand that the beautiful, unusual flowers were indeed the same plant no matter if their blooms turned from white to pink and then to blood-red in the course of twenty-four hours. No. Rebekah's two-year-old mind was simply convinced that somebody was switching out the flowers during the span of a day just to trick her!

Next Tuesday, register voters in Clayton and Eufaula have one of the greatest privileges and one of the most important jobs given to them, to elect a mayor that will represent them for the next four years. Clayton will also be choosing a council member for District 2. This job should not be taken lightly.

Time stood still at 8:46 a.m. on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, and I can still remember every single moment that followed. The sky was clear and blue that morning. It was the first year of my teaching career, my fifth day to be exact. I was just out of college, still living with my parents in a NYC suburb, and was as brighteyed and optimistic as they come. I was ready to make a difference and to change the world, one child at a time. I had spent years preparing for this moment, proud and overjoyed to finally be a teacher.
Last week’s municipal elections are in the history books but voters in Clayton and Eufaula will be asked to return to the polls for a run-off election on September 23.
