County budget includes 10% raise

Barbour County commissioners passed the county’s Fiscal Year 2022-23 budget during a special called meeting held last week with no discussion of line items. The budget includes a 10% raise for anyone working for the county effective September 30, the end of this fiscal year.

Ode to the humble frog

I consider the frog as the unsung hero and underdog (underfrog?) of the forests and woodlands. It seems we humans with our lofty airs seldom consider the humble amphibian until we need him for a variety of reasons - as an easy meal, as a natural barometer, even as a kind of folk hero.

I hear the tell-tale sound of a laying hen's "churr-churr" followed by a loud squawking "bok … Bhok!" Then, in succession, each and every one of my remaining six layers sound off with their particular voices until my yard is filled with a chorus of chickens congratulating their sister on laying an egg. The growling voice of my rooster, Colonel, says "hurr-hurr" above it all. And my duck's thunderous "wak-wak-HONK" rings out louder than a pistol-shot.
