Teachers, support personnel, administrators and guests gathered Monday at Barbour County High School in Clayton to prepare for the launching of the 2025-26 school year. Students returned to the classrooms Tuesday for their first day of the school term.
Thirty years ago the Dixie Academy Rebels became the school’s second football team to win the 1A Alabama Independent School Championship Title. The team, coached by Mack Williams, defeated the Patrician Academy Saints 14-6 to claim the title. To celebrate the milestone of the team’s accomplishments in 1995, Coach Williams and several team members gathered at Abercrombie’s Fish Camp in Clayton Saturday night for a reunion. The 1995 Dixie Academy football only lost one game during the season. The year’s record was Pike Liberal Arts 14-12; Greenville Tornadoes 26-8; Ashford Academy Falcons 70-6; Abbeville Christian Generals 44-12; Sparta Warriors 50-8, Edgewood Academy 38-12; Coosa Valley Academy 50-6; Calvary Christian Academy, their only defeat, 613; Bullock Memorial Spartans 50-0 and another shutout to their rival team, Lakeside Chiefs 42-0.
A new scholarship fund established to support Barbour County High School students has been established. The F.C. Britt Scholarship was created by the Wallace Community College Sparks Foundation.
Circuit Judge Burt Smithart, who is the presiding judge for the 3rd Judicial Circuit comprised of Barbour and Bullock Counties, holds the distinction of serving the most years of any Circuit Judge in the state.

The Alabama 4-H Forestry Team from Eufaula captured 5th place at the National 4-H Forestry Invitational contest in Weston, WV. The event was held from Sunday, July 20, through Wednesday, July 23.
Barbour Countians who attended community meetings Thursday heard emphatically that county commissioners are not planning to close the county courthouse in Clayton.
Evergreen Baptist Church will celebrate its 150th Anniversary on Sunday, July 27. The public is invited to attend this historic occasion beginning at 10:30 a.m. with a covered dish lunch following in the Fellowship Hall. This quaint church, located west of Clayton off of Highway 239, has sustained through years by the leadership of the pastors that have served this small country church by sharing the word and love of God. Their dedication has enriched and transformed lives and brought people together for fellowship for a century and half.
After some concern voiced at the Clayton City Council meeting Monday night concerning an Agreement between Clayton and the Barbour County Commission regarding Enhanced 911 Emergency Communication Service, a meeting was held Tuesday morning with Sheriff Tyrone Smith and City Council members. The meeting was held Clayton City Hall at 10:00 with City Council members Brittani O-Hara Grant, Richard Peairson and Alex Moses present.
