The Barbour County Board of Education approved an agreement with the Barbour County Commission during last week’s called meeting regarding the district’s School Resource Officers. One certified officer is assigned to the Barbour County High School on a full-time basis while the other certified officer will work part-time at the Intermediate School and the Middle School.
Stephen Clifton Davis, a resident of Blue Springs, was killed Saturday morning when the motorcycle he was operating left the roadway and struck a tree. Davis, who is 46 years of age, was operating a 2007 Honda Shadow motor- cycle when the accident occurred on Alabama 10 near the 202 mile marker, about one mile east of Blue Springs.
Qualifying for political office is approaching for the March 5, 2024 Primary election initiating interests in candidates who may be seeking election for local offices to be included on the ballot. All seven seats on the Barbour County Commission will be up for election as well as the Probate Judge, Circuit Clerk, the District 2 seat on the Barbour County Board of Education, and all seven constable districts.
The gazebo in downtown Eufaula was the setting for the annual memorial ceremony held to remember the 81,000 American service members who are unaccounted. The ceremony was held by members of the Eufaula Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5850.
A murder conviction was returned by a Eufaula jury last week after hearing evidence presented on the shooting that killed Brandon Christopher Henry in Eufaula in 2020. Henry was 24 years old at the time of his death.
Commissioner Jerry McGilvray, who presided over last week’s meeting of the Barbour County Commission as vice chairman, discussed at length a grand jury report on the Eufaula courthouse. Rare discussions are held before commissioners on grand jury reports regarding either the Clayton or Eufaula courthouses but the item was a point of discussion on the agenda.
Governor Kay Ivey visited with children and staff at the Barbour County Intermediate School (BCIS) in Louisville last Friday morning. The visit was part of the governor’s Turnaround Schools Initiative Tours.
Saturday is the first day of fall. The cooler temperatures, lower humidity and some rain have been welcoming. A sure sign of fall is evident when the Spider Lilies begin to bloom and they are beginning to show up spontaneously. ****** It’s also time for farmers to harvest crops for the season. Some have reported corn and cotton are being picked and soon we will have the fresh smell of peanuts being turned. Reports also indicate that this year’s crops are good.
The four members of the Barbour County Board of Registrars have received their reappointment notifications. Ed Parish of Clayton, who is the longest serving member of the board with 16 years of service, was reappointed by Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries Rick Pate.
A new contract gained Barbour County commissioners’ approval with SARCOA (Southern Alabama Regional Council on Aging) for the Clayton Senior Center. The contract with SARCOA which provides food vendor services to senior centers was unanimously approved at last week’s meeting of the commission held in Clayton.
