Candidates prepare to qualify for office

Qualifying for political office is approaching for the March 5, 2024 Primary election initiating interests in candidates who may be seeking election for local offices to be included on the ballot. All seven seats on the Barbour County Commission will be up for election as well as the Probate Judge, Circuit Clerk, the District 2 seat on the Barbour County Board of Education, and all seven constable districts.

School Board approves SRO agreement with commission

The Barbour County Board of Education approved an agreement with the Barbour County Commission during last week’s called meeting regarding the district’s School Resource Officers. One certified officer is assigned to the Barbour County High School on a full-time basis while the other certified officer will work part-time at the Intermediate School and the Middle School.

Jury recommends new courthouse repairs

Commissioner Jerry McGilvray, who presided over last week’s meeting of the Barbour County Commission as vice chairman, discussed at length a grand jury report on the Eufaula courthouse. Rare discussions are held before commissioners on grand jury reports regarding either the Clayton or Eufaula courthouses but the item was a point of discussion on the agenda.

Saturday is the first day of fall. The cooler temperatures, lower humidity and some rain have been welcoming. A sure sign of fall is evident when the Spider Lilies begin to bloom and they are beginning to show up spontaneously. ****** It’s also time for farmers to harvest crops for the season. Some have reported corn and cotton are being picked and soon we will have the fresh smell of peanuts being turned. Reports also indicate that this year’s crops are good.
