75 YEARS AGO OCTOBER 15, 1948 Several new members were initiated into the Clayton Future Homemakers of America Wednesday morning at the Vocational Home Economics building. Those receiving chapter pins were Ima Jo Green, Camilla Green, Annie Mae Dykes, Libby Bowden, Bertha Ray Boyd, Mary Evelyn Smoot, Patricia Harrison, Jacqueline Tew, Willette Sharp, Sara Lee McNalley, Carolyn Cook and Jessie Cook.
We have written several articles on the historic Rosenwald Schools. The one in Clayton on Martin Luther King Avenue is in need of renovations and the one in Midway is being converted into a community center and a place for other activities.
Toney Jones, a resident of Eufaula, along with Dr. John Waldrop, a Georgia doctor, turned themselves in to authorities in Atlanta after being indicted for smuggling taxidermied birds and eggs into the United States.
A trespasser at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton attempted to get contraband inside the state prison facility on Tuesday, October 10. The attempt made by Antares Neyan Banks was unsuccessful when he was arrested by the Alabama Department of Corrections Law Enforcement Services Division.
An investigation has begun on the death of a Midway man who had been reported missing last week. Eddie Lee Thomas, 77, had been to a car show in Springhill in Barbour County on Saturday, October 7.
Alabama’s 2nd congressional district stretches across the width of the state in the new congressional map, creating an open seat. The district, which includes Barbour County, leads the way for a minority candidate to get elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
Barbour County Commissioner Earl Gilmore was re-elected to serve as commission chairman at Tuesday’s meeting held in Eufaula. Gilmore, who has served as chairman of the commission since May of 2005, will continue in the position after receiving two opposing votes.
A couple from Ariton is in Dale County Jail after an investigation discovered they had abused three young children. Ashleigh Ableman, age 27, and her boyfriend, Howard Anderson, age 53, allegedly burned Ableman’s three children with a blowtorch several times according to Lieutenant Caroline Jackson with the Dale County Sheriff’s Department.
Alabama Power Company’s Southeast Division, based in Eufaula, has a newly appointed vice president. Jason Davis assumes the position previously held by Ken Novak.
