75 YEARS AGO MAY 16, 1947 Miss Betty Harrison represented the Third District in the Birmingham-News-Age-Herald oratorical contest held in Birmingham on May 9th. The subject for the speeches was “The Kind of Education I Want in High School and After.” The contestants were guests of the Birmingham News at the Redmont Hotel.
75 YEARS AGO MAY 9, 1947 On Friday, May 2, the Clayton nine defeated Bakerhill by a margin of seven to four. Lefty “Stackpole” Barnes, Clayton pitcher, yielded only three hits, striking out 13 of the opponent’s men.

75 YEARS AGO MARCH 14, 1941 The Barbour County 1947 Basketball Tournament got underway in Louisville last Friday, March 7, at 1:00 p.m., when the Louisville B Team handed the Clio Bees a shellacking. The Louisville and Clio A Teams tangled at 2:00 p.m.
50 YEARS AGO FEBRUARY 10, 1972 Larry Dykes of Louisville was winner of the State 4-H Club Tractor Driving Contest. He was presented a plaque by Bill Mayfield, Specialist in Agricultural Engineering of Auburn University, at the Annual Farmer’s Day held in Clayton at the Armory last Friday.
