BY CONNIE BEDSOLE 75 YEARS AGO AUGUST 8, 1947 Carl Strang, Jr., a member of the Eufaula 4-H Club, left Sunday for Camp Grist, located near Selma, to attend a week’s course primarily dealing with forestry problems. Carl will get intensive training in identifying, estimating timber, managing woodland and preventing forest fires.

75 YEARS AGO JULY 25, 1947 Eufaula and Clayton played a hotly contested game on the local diamond Sunday afternoon in which Eufaula went on to win the first half of the tenth inning by a score of 6 to 5. Cox pitched through the seventh inning before giving way to Roland who went the route home.

75 YEARS AGO JULY 18, 1947 The Louisville baseball team defeated the Clayton “Busters” last Thursday night by a substantial score. Clayton played a number of men said to be ineligible to play in the league and the Louisville manager protested the game after the first ball was pitched.

75 YEARS AGO JULY 11, 1947 In a well played baseball Sunday on the local Clayton field, the Clayton team defeated the Bakerhill nine by a score of five to two. Barnes was on the mound for Clayton and pitched an outstanding game.

75 YEARS AGO JULY 4, 1947 The local chapters of the Clayton Future Farmers and Future Homemakers of America were featured at the State Convention of Future Homemakers of America at Alabama College, Monticello, June 30 to July 3. They were invited to be on the program to give ideas and suggestions to the state group on Father and Son, Mother and Daughter banquets.

75 YEARS AGO JUNE 6, 1947 A delegation of Columbus civic and business leaders toured Barbour County last week inviting all residents of the county to attend the 1947 “Hi Neighbor” Day. Barbour County will be feted and saluted on Wednesday, June 11, when the gates to the city swing open to extend a cordial welcome and lots of surprizes for our residents.
