The O’Neil Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham reports that colorectal cancer can be prevented. Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women, and African Americans have the highest rate of colorectal cancer among all racial groups in the United States.

The Ladies of Christ Child Circle reflect upon the organization’s benevolent beginnings around Annie Dent’s kitchen table. Guest speaker Lindsey Bennett, director of Fendall Hall, shared that CCC began as a sewing circle in which Annie taught her daughters and a few friends to sew. Eventually, these young seamstresses created newborn layettes that were donated to impoverished local families. Weekly meetings of fellowship, coffee, tea and hand-stitching evolved into a century-old service organization which continues to greatly impact many children of Eufaula and Barbour County. Today as a United Way agency, CCC coordinates its efforts with other local organizations to serve this community’s families.

Teachers and Support Staff of the Year were recognized at a recent board meeting. Teachers of the Year winners are Pelina Jessie - Eufaula High School, Dylan Ludlam Admiral Moorer Middle School (System Secondary Teacher of the Year), Ronnetta Wade - Eufaula Elementary School (System Elementary Teacher of the Year), Sharon Hudson Smith- Eufaula Primary School and Cathy Forte - Eufaula Early Learning Center.
Members of the 2023 graduating class at Barbour County High School in Clayton are encouraged to apply for a scholarship now available from the Clayton High School Class of 1982. Applications are available at the school and can be obtained from the school counselor.
The Forever Wild Wehle Tract, located on Pleasant Hill Road in Midway, has announced the 2023 schedule. Camping, Fishing and Trail use will be available March 3-5,March 17-19; April 7-9, April 14-16, April 21-23; and May 57 and May 19-20.
Read Across America Week will be celebrated in schools across Barbour County and America from March 2 to March 6. It begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. In fact, the entire month of March is dedicated to reading.
