Using coffee grounds in home gardens can be excellent fertilizer

Some early morning people have that CUP OF COFFEE to jump-start their day. Then again, others drink coffee to aid them in other activities. For example, they were drinking coffee to stay up to study for tests and other pressing life issues. Nevertheless, the research on the by-product (coffee grounds) shows that they can benefit garden use. First, they are an excellent source of organic matter, which helps improve the garden soil.

Students named to honor lists at UA

A total of 12,791 students enrolled during Fall Semester 2022 at The University of Alabama were named to the dean's list with an academic record of 3.5 (or above) or the president's list with an academic record of 4.0 (all A's). These driven students are making waves across UA's more than 70 undergraduate programs and 12 colleges and schools.

ARTWORK TO BE ON DISPLAY

EHS STUDENTS ARTWORK TO BE DISPLAYED Artwork by Patricia Waters, top left, Caroline Evans, top right, and Mackenzie Young, right, were selected to represent Eufaula City Schools to be displayed in the 2023 State Superintendent’s Visual Art Exhibit. Their artwork will be on public display February 3- 24 at the Old Supreme Court Library in the Alabama State Capitol.

POSTER CONTEST WINNER

Mary Mac Cooper is the winner of the K-1 Alabama Association of Conservation Poster Contest in Area V. She is a member of a third-generation farm family. This year’s topic, “Healthy Soils, Healthy Life,” made it easy for her to come up with ideas for her poster. She drew a picture depicting what she sees each day on their farm. She is the daughter of Justin and Kathryn Cooper of Clayton and is a first grader at The Lakeside School in Eufaula. She is shown with Johnny Lee and Mike Birge.

Barbour Countians recognized as state winners

JOHN AND ELIZABETH GRAY Outstanding Wildlife Conservationist Gray Acres LLC is owned by John and Elizabeth Gray of Eufaula and is comprised of 2,650 contiguous acres in Barbour and Russell County. Gray Acres operated as a cattle farm for over 50 years running up to 1,200 head annually. It has undergone a gradual transformation in the last 25 years and now consists of a 1,900-acre timber plantation and a 732-acre wetland and stream mitigation bank.
