Talking about a mixture of events!!! We never know what to expect in southeast Alabama what to expect. We’ve had everything from warm spring temperatures to snow flurries, a tornado, and then the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. Bulbs are beginning to pop out of the ground and blooms are sprouting on trees. We loved the picture on social media of the groundhog reminding us that we should believe him when cold weather returned last week. Monday is the first day of spring so maybe soon warmer temperatures are here to stay for a while.

Tornado causes property damages

“I’m just glad God is still in charge,” is how John Earl Marshall of Clayton described destruction at his house after a tornado hit in Clayton early last Wednesday, March 9. Later that day a National Weather Service meteorologist arrived in Clayton to survey the damage and determined an EF-1 tornado had hit the area.

Eufaula Art Scene

Outstanding Young Farmers

Ashley and Joe McCraney of Louisville are the recipients of the 2022 Poultry Division of the Outstanding Young Farm Family Award presented by the Alabama Farmers Federation. Paul Pinyan, federation executive director, left, presents the award to Mrs. McCraney during the conference held last weekend in Gulf Shores. Also shown are their son, Trace, Joe McCraney and Hunter McBrayer, federation’s Young Farmers Division director. As winners they will serve in ex-officio roles on their respective commodity committee for 2022. During the conference, 13 families competed for OYFF commodity division titles and three finalist slots.

Council okays rescue squad proposals

Appearing before the Clayton City Council Monday night was Clayton Fire and Rescue Chief Paul Gulledge who addressed the council and provide an update on current and projected manning issues. Chief Gulledge told the council that for the last 10 years Clayton Rescue has been a self-sustaining service that does not draw funds from the general fund except when needed but does provide to the general fund.

Permits needed for burning

The Alabama Forestry Commission issued a reminder recently before you light garbage, grass, or something else on fire, a permit is needed. According to the Forestry Commission, a permit is needed if anyone is planning to burn 1/4 acre or more woodland, grassland, fields or new ground.
