The G.W. Long Rebels clinched the Class 2A, Area 3 title Friday, April 7, when they defeated county rivals, the Ariton Purple Cats. The 6-1 win finished off a two game, two-day sweep for the Rebels. The games were all played on Ariton’s Thad Dansby Field.
Easter Week - From Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday is a special time in the Biblical calendar. We follow Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the Last Supper, the Crucifixion and then on Easter Sunday, the resurrection of the risen Christ. Church services are scheduled this week that are open to the public. They will be a wonderful way to observe Holy Week.
Students in the Barbour County School System will have their face masks requirements relaxed after action was taken by members of the School Board Monday night. They began the school term in August under the requirement to wear face masks when inside buildings with them being able to remove them when involved in outside activities.
I have seen paintings and movies showing the crucifixion of Jesus. One movie was graphic in the scene where he is nailed to the cross. When I think about how cruel this was to him, I am amazed that we call this day “Good Friday.” Why is Good Friday “good” if that is the day Jesus died?
75 YEARS AGO APRIL 11,1947 Clarence Milldrum of the Clayton FFA Chapter, won first place in the public speaking contest at the FFA Quarter-Finals Public Speaking and Quartet Contest that was held in Tuskegee on March 25 at 12:30 p.m. The Tuskegee FFA Chapter was in charge of the program.
The National Weather Service has determined that a EF-1 tornado touched down in Eufaula last Tuesday, April 5, the third tornado that has impacted the city within the last four years. The tornado touched down in forested land just north of the end of the Yoholo Micco Trail extension, east of Chewalla Creek.
In order to install a new system and hardware, Barbour County Driver License offices will be closed from April 18 through April 25. Offices plan to reopen on Tuesday, April 26.
A functioning firearm was found in the roadway in Eufaula Wednesday, March 30, by a citizen and turned over to the police department. According to the Eufaula Police Department, the weapon had been freshly painted to mimic a toy.
Three Eufaula men were arrested for their involvement in incidents that occurred over the weekend at Panama City Beach. Some social media groups called the event the “PCB Takeover.” The three from Eufaula who were among 161 bookings made at the Bay County Jail are Sylvester Juanya Cunningham, Jadarrius Daquon Richardson and Assonte Cortez McClinton.
