GRADUATES FROM UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA - Emily Jalea Jackson of Midway will be among those graduating from the University of Alabama on Saturday, May 7. The ceremonies are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. from Coleman Coliseum on the campus of the University. Emily is graduating with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology. She is a member of Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., General Art Club, Black Student Union and UA Non Panhellenic Council. She is the daughter of Johnny and Latesia Jackson of Midway and the granddaughter of Henry and Laura Marshall.

Alabama making strides on broadband access, infrastructure in the Black Belt

Infrastructure in Alabama’s Black Belt region - and in rural Alabama in general - lags far behind the rest of the state, but some progress is being made. From roads and bridges to sewage systems to broadband internet access, there has been a shift among Alabama’s leadership in the last few years that will benefit rural areas in the long run, according to researchers at the University of Alabama’s Education Policy Center.

Automated garbage collection starts May 1

A new Automated Curbside Garbage Collection ordinance will go into effect in Eufaula on May 1. The city council adopted the amended garbage collection ordinance on April 4 “in an effort to protect the health and safety” of personnel as well as to meet the city’s goal for “maintaining the beauty” of the city, according to a letter mailed to residents.

Barbour County Crime Reports

Barbour County deputies remain vigilant across the county in an attempt to keep citizens safe. On Tuesday, April 19, Deputy Lynnmarie Martin responded to a church located at 45 Dry Creek in Midway in reference to the theft of an air conditioning unit from a church.

AGRICULTURE DAY

The Barbour County Young Farmers and Barbour County Extension office held the tenth Annual AG Day for the third-grade classrooms throughout the county, March 25. Students and volunteers attended the event at Eufaula Elementary School. The students rotated around six stations each focusing on an agriculture commodity.
