The Alabama Independent School Association has released the recipients of the 2021- 2022 AISA Blue Ribbon School Award. This is the 21st consecutive year that The Lakeside School in Eufaula has been recognized with the Blue Ribbon School Award.
Courtney Upshaw, a Eufaula native, is returning to the NFL, not as a player, but as a coach. He has been chosen by the Atlanta Falcons as an intern coach as part of the Bill Walsh Coaching Diversity Fellowship.

Registration for the fall 2022 Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) workshop opens on August 1 at 6 p.m. for firsttime attendees and August 8 at 6 p.m. for both first-timers and those who have previously attended. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources sponsored event takes place at the 4- H Center near Columbiana, on October 7-9, 2022.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) and Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA) held its summer conference July 18-22 at the Renaissance Montgomery Convention Center in Montgomery.
Children in three age groups, 6 to 9, 10 to 13, and 14 to 18, turned out with their fishing gear to Old Creek Town Park on Lake Eufaula Friday to enter competitions in the Action Marine Fishing Rodeo sponsored by the Eufaula Parks and Recreation. The fishing rodeo, named for the major sponsor, Action Marine, brought children to the lake to wet their feet as well as their fishing rods in hopes of catching a lot of fish. They also entered a drawing for a bike to be given away in all three age group categories. Winners of the bikes provided by the sponsors were James Guilford, ages 6-9, Jerry Hicks, ages 10-13, and Cutter Swint, ages 14-18.
In my observations of Alabama politics, every election year brings an underlying election year surprise or two. The underlying prevailing theme emerging from the Alabama political arena this year is that women have arrived politically in the Heart of Dixie.
Barbour County Board of Education members awarded a bid at last week’s meeting to construct a new Athletic Field House on the campus of Barbour County High School. Anderson Construction Company was awarded the bid in the amount of $2,643,287, which is more than initially $1.5 million estimated costs because of additions and increased expenses.
A search warrant was executed last Thursday morning, July 21 by the Eufaula Police Department in the investigation of the murder of 18-year-old Quantvious Howard of Eufaula on July 16. Personnel with the Alabama State Bureau of Investigations assisted Eufaula Police Department officers with the execution of the search warrant but nothing of evidentiary value was recovered.
