Ventress inmate dies

An inmate at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton was found unresponsive on Thursday, September 8. According to a statement from the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC), Alvin Jacobs was rushed to the healthcare unit where medical staff attempted life-saving measures.

Clayton Senior Center to close end of month

Barbour County commissioners, who have been operating the Clayton Senior Center for many years, voted to rescind their contract with SARCOA (Southeast Alabama Regional Council on Aging) for Fiscal Year 2023 and take action on future operations. The unanimous vote taken at a called meeting Monday afternoon scheduled to discuss the FY 2023 budget will result in the closure of the center, located on North Midway Street in Clayton on September 30.

Sad day for Clayton seniors

It’s a sad day in Clayton when our county commissioners voted Monday in a called meeting to close the senior center in Clayton. The center has been a place where seniors could gather for social activities and enjoy fellowship for numerous years.

An opportunity to clean up the Alabama Constitution

Since it was written in 1901, the current Alabama Constitution has been amended almost 1000 times, making it by far the world’s longest constitution. The amendments have also riddled the Constitution with redundancies, creating a maze of words known to befuddle even legal scholars. In addition, Alabama’s Constitution is peppered throughout with language and provisions, e.g., poll taxes, that reflect the racist intent of those who originally wrote it. While much of this language has been declared illegal and voided by twentieth century court rulings, it is still in the document and has been pointed to by other states when competing with Alabama for economic growth.

Eufaula man killed in early morning single vehicle wreck

A Eufaula man succumbed to injuries from a single-vehicle accident that occurred Monday, September 19, at approximately 2:40 a.m., according a release from the Opelika Post and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The report states that Demetrius A. Conway, 38, was fatally injured when the 2004 GMC Yukon he was driving left the roadway, struck a fence and then a tree. The accident occurred on Alabama 110 near the 20 mile marker, approximately 13 miles east of Union Springs in Bullock County.

Roundabout hopes to help traffic flow

A temporary roundabout at one of the monuments in Eufaula hopefully will help with the flow of traffic in the downtown area. The Eufaula City Council passed a resolution in support of the plan to implement a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Broad Street and Orange Avenue “to ensure safe navigation of this important corridor which is crucial to the connectivity of downtown.” Installing the temporary roundabout will provide the opportunity to test whether a permanent roundabout should be implemented in the future.
