The Clayton/West Barbour County Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Committee has announced plans for the 2023 MLK Birthday Celebration. The day’s activities will begin with a Unity Walk/Ride beginning on Monday, January 16th at 9:30 a.m.
BEASLEY The work stoppage at the WestRock Mahart in Cottonton continues into the new year after the company’s latest contract proposal was rejected last week. The proposal was rejected for the third time since employees began to be locked out in October.
Someone took the liberty to steal the large Welcome Sign located at White Oak Camp Park last week. Anthony Duane Strickland with the Corps of Engineers reported that when he went to the campground park, he noticed the sign had been stolen.
Barbour County commissioners voted to purchase property in Clio where the new Senior Site will be constructed. The undisclosed amount of the purchase was approved at Tuesday’s regular commission meeting held in Clayton.

Members of the Barbour County Board of Education approved the 2023-2024 School Calendar during their December meeting. Two options were presented for consideration with Option B receiving a unanimous vote from board members.
Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission was awarded a $310,877 workforce inclusion grant from the Center for Workforce Inclusion, Inc. (Center). Almost 90 percent of this grant – originally from the U.S. Department of Labor – will provide on-the-job training to no less than 52 low-income older Alabamians living in Barbour, Coffee, Covington, Dale, Geneva, Henry, and Houston Counties. This workforce inclusion grant will support Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission operate its Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP).
