Dr. Bennett receives distinguished award
Dr. Robert H. Bennett, III, a native of Louisville and current resident of Eufaula, is the recipient of the distinguished 2023 Professor of the Year Award at Georgia Southwestern State University in Americus.
Hospital appropriated public funds
Barbour County commissioners approved a resolution to appropriate a total of $550,000 to assist the financially strapped hospital in Eufaula. In a meeting that lasted less than 30 minutes held in Clayton Tuesday, commissioners unanimously approved the appropriation to the Health Care Authority of the City of Eufaula “to support the continued availability of hospital services and support economic development.” The funds, to be taken from the commission’s America Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, are specified for Medical Center Barbour’s operational purposes.

Parole denied for inmates with local crimes
Three men incarcerated in state prison facilities for crimes committed in Barbour County appeared before the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles in April. Parole was denied for all three of the men.

Science students visit McWane Center
The Barbour County High School Science classes traveled to Birmingham to the McWane Science Center for a fun and educational field trip recently. Students had a great time observing demonstrations exploring various exhibits and taking part in hands-on learning.
Victims shot in drive-by shooting
A drive-by shooting was reported shortly about 6:30 Tuesday night on North Midway Street in Clayton. At the scene, three victims were shot and several cars sustained damage by the gun shots fired into the parking lot.
Contractor to oversee elevator project
Barbour County commissioners will contract with a consultant to advise them on the best way to repair the nonfunctional elevator in the county courthouse in Clayton. They met in a special called meeting Monday morning during which they discussed procedures to take to repair the elevator that has been inoperable for several months.
Inmate’s death reported at Ventress state prison
A 60-year-old inmate at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton reportedly died at the facility’s infirmary. According to a news release from the Alabama Department of Corrections, inmate Marcus Antonio Williams reported to the health care with breathing difficulties.
Sheriff’s deputies investigate incidents
Arrest reports have been released by the Barbour County Sheriff’s Department. Arrests reported were Jamarcus Jamal Dozier, 28, of Eufaula on charges of Criminal Mischief, 1st degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Attempting to Elude at the PNC parking lot in Eufaula; Kisha Denise Nelson, 23, of Eufaula on charges of Driving Suspended, Failure to Register Vehicle, and Failing/Display Insurance at the Eufaula City Jail; Johnny Randell Heath, 52, of Clayton on charges of Driver License Revoked, Improper Lights, and Failure to Comply in Clayton; and Algie Jacal Williams Jr., 29, of Midway on charges of Attempted to Elude.
