Sheriff’s proposal rejected

Barbour County commissioners voted against a request from Sheriff Tyrone Smith to enter into an agreement with the Alabama Department of Corrections last week during the regular scheduled meeting of the commission held at the Barbour County Courthouse in Clayton. The request was for law enforcement personnel from the Sheriff’s Office to work extra duty assignments at ADOC facilities for the purpose of contraband interdiction. Commissioners Frances Crews and Pat Ivey wanted to table the request until the August meeting and made a motion to wait until Sheriff Smith could be present to explain further the proposed request. Sheriff Smith was in a conference and unable to attend the meeting. Commissioners voted four to two against tabling the motion made by Commissioner Crews and seconded by Commissioner Ivey Voting against tabling the request were Commissioners Rachel Smith, Jason Bennett, Earl Gilmore and Jerry McGilvray.
