Alabama’s first female governor, Lurleen Wallace

It was 55 years ago in May 1968 that Alabama’s first female governor, Lurleen Wallace, passed away. Kay Ivey is Alabama’s second female governor. Lurleen Wallace was the first. Appropriately, Kay Ivey’s idol and impetus for striving to be governor was Lurleen Wallace. Kay’s first involvement in state politics was as a campaign worker for Governor Lurleen’s 1966 race for governor when Kay Ivey was a student at Auburn.

Many people think of Memorial Day as the unofficial start of summer but it’s a day to honor military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, the American holiday began during the Civil War when flowers were placed on graves of those who had been killed in battle. The day is observed the last Monday in May. We wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day but remember the true reason for the holiday. ****** Two area teams deserve our congratulations. The Abbeville Christian girls were runner-up in the state softball championship and the Ariton Purple Cats won the state championship for the first time in any sport when they won the baseball championship title.

Miss Molly and other ‘walking newspapers’

'If you want it to be known, just tell Miss Molly - or any other of these 'walking newspapers!'' My Mama always gave this advice - or some might call it a warning - back when I was a little girl growing up in Nitrate City, Alabama. She was referring to a lady known as 'Miss Molly,' a part-time clerk at the local corner store and a full-time neighborhood gossip. Well, to call Miss Molly a gossip is kind of an understatement, because when Mama called her a 'walking newspaper,' she wasn't exaggerating.

Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Day and the week in which follows as Police Week. We appreciate all those officers who have given the ultimate sacrifice.
