It’s hard for us to image that school doors will be opening for a new term beginning this week. We tend to lean toward opinions stated that students now get out of school too late and start too early. We remember times when classes did not start until after Labor Day. Today’s schedules, however, allow for longer holiday breaks and other days off to separate the school year. It is what it is, as they say, so we extend our well wishes to all who are returning to the classrooms and wish all a successful school year. ****** It’s still hot outside. Continue to take precautions and stay hydrated. As always protect your pets from this extreme heat.

Redistricting

Alabama lawmakers are in a special session this week to address the court ordered redistricting of the state’s congressional districts. The Supreme Court ruled that based on the state’s population, a second minority district had to be created to provide better representation of the state’s population.

Nicknames are funny things

For the past eight years almost everyone in our family has referred to my daughter as 'Baby.' And is it any wonder? Rebekah is an only child and the sole grandchild on my side of the family. So when somebody says 'the baby' it isn't exactly a mystery as to who they're talking about.

We continue to be under an extreme heat advisory with little to no chance of rain this week. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, we consider the Dog Days to be the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11. This is soon after the Summer Solstice. We also are experiencing a “cloud cover” which is the result of smoke from Canadian wildfires. While we are accustom to these weather conditions, please remember to stay hydrated.

Calling all Seniors!

Barbour County commissioners have hired a director for the Clayton Senior Center. After they closed the center where seniors gathered for meals, fellowship, and enjoyment, commissioners closed the center in October of last year amongst some internal issues.
