Great year for The Record
It’s been a year since The Clayton Record went under the ownership of CherryRoad Media, Inc. To us, it’s been a very short year and one that has been different but enjoyable.

I walk into Mama's house and the odor hits me like a giant invisible wall. The spicy aroma of pickling syrup fills my nose like a sneeze. My eyes water, but in the best way. This is the smell of the summer. And every available surface of Mama's kitchen covered in tubs of cucumbers pickling in brine is a sight August would not be complete without.
75 YEARS AGO AUGUST 1, 1947 The Clayton Junior 4-H Club baseball team defeated the Louisville Junior 4-H Club 17 to 5 Monday afternoon, July 28, at Louisville. Carl Roebuck and Marshall Williams played outstanding ball offensively and defensively for the Clayton Juniors.

Americans will celebrate our 246th Independence Day on July 4. While we are enjoying this festive occasion, let’s remember the reason we are celebrating this occasion. Sacrifices were made by our forefathers and struggles have been experienced since that time. It’s always a heartwarming experience to hear patriotic performances and see the annual ceremonies on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. It never gets old each year to enjoy the celebrations, music, fireworks, and family gatherings during the July 4th holidays. Be safe and have fun!
It's June. It's the month of flowers, fresh vegetables, weddings, barbecues, vacation Bible school and, on our farm at any rate, babies. Lots and lots of babies. Baby chicks, baby goats, baby kittens. We're positively bursting with all this new life.
On June 6, 1944, 78 years ago, marks the invasion of the coast along the stretch of beachs in the Normandy, France region. The invasion was codenamed Operation Oveerlord, also known as D-Day. It is a time in history we never will forget.

The governor’s races of bygone years were a lot more fun and colorful than today. We would have 10 to 15 candidates. There would be three or four favorites, but we would have 10 others that would make an effort to crisscross the state and have fun and cut up a little bit to garner publicity. The “also rans” could not afford the expensive country music stars from Nashville like the George Wallace, Big Jim Folsom, Jimmy Faulkner frontrunners could to draw a crowd.
The bright yellow daylilies are in full bloom around the town bell in the Clayton Cemetery. The town bell that once was on the square in Clayton was used to sound the alarm that there was a fire and everyone needed to report to help get water from the well to help put out the fire. It was moved years ago to the cemetry wher it has a prominent location. Garden club members have helped maintain and plant the daylilies around the bell.

We wish everyone a safe and happy Memorial Day. While enjoying the holiday, take time to remember the reason for the federal observance. Our fallen soldiers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country are truly our heroes. They gave their lives for the betterment of our country and its people.
It may have been a small amount of rain we received Sunday night but a small amount is better than nothing at all. It is very dry in Barbour County so the precious rainfall was welcomed.
