Monday is Labor Day which is suppose to be the unofficial end to summer. Our thermometers are not indicating any relief in the heat but there are reports that some leaves are beginning to turn colors. With the unofficial end of summer comes the beginning of football season with high school games and college games. Be safe out there on the roads and during your special events planned for the holiday weekend. ****** We are very appreciative for our subscribers who are loyal to renew their subscriptions. Behold, the versatile dumplin’

It can give you breakfast, dinner and dessert and then give you a pet name for your best sweetheart too.' Daddy always called me his 'dumplin'.' BY CONNIE BEDSOLE 75 YEARS AGO AUGUST 22, 1947 The Clayton Busters handed Louisville a 5 to 4 defeat on the local diamond last Friday night, August 15, after pitchers Hasten of Clayton and Finlayson of Louisville, staged a pitching duel that lasted ten innings. Hasten chalked up his second victory for Clayton in as many starts striking out seven men and giving up only seven scattered hits, while his opponent, Finlayson struck out eight men and gave up nine hits.

The Farmers’ Almanac is already warning us about the weather this winter. Reports are to be prepared for “slivery, wet and slushy” winter months. We’ve been fortunate to escape long periods of brutal cold temperatures for a few years but if the almanac is on target, get ready. Not only will there be cold temperatures, it will be “slivery, wet and slushy.”

Massive dark clouds are forming all of a sudden recently bringing inches of rainfall unexpectedly. The rainfall is good for some yet a hinderance for others. Reports are that January, June and July have been below normal but every other month, including August, has had above normal rainfall. The amount of rainfall has helped with drought conditions we experience a lot of summers. ****** We all know that schools are back in session for the new school term and we need to be more cautious at bus stops and in school zones. It’s so easy to get distracted and forget that the little ones often do not do the looking they should. Slow down, watch for school buses to flash lights and extend stop signs, and make sure children get to and from school
