Former Barbour County Sheriff Leroy Upshaw will appear in Barbour County Circuit Court on August 9 for a sentencing hearing on a felony ethics charge conviction. Attorney General Steve Marshall announced Upshaw’s conviction in June.
Bids were opened last week that were submitted to Barbour County commissioners on the malfunctioning elevator in the county courthouse in Clayton. The bid proposal requested bidders to submit bids for the renovation, and/or repair, and/or refurbishment of the elevator.
The new map realigning the state’s seven congressional districts legislators approved in a special session is once again under the scrutiny of a three-judge district court. A hearing will begin on August 14 to determine if the districts meet the required two majority Black voting age populations.
The Eufaula City Council meetings will be held in a different location until further notice due to renovations at the current meeting place. Due to moderate renovations at the Eufaula Police Department, the bi-weekly meetings will be relocated beginning with the Monday, August 7 meeting.
A Skipperville man who was initially believed to have been murdered is now believed to have been mauled by a pack of dogs. The victim was identified as 27-year-old Demarcus “Sam” McKenzie II who was found unresponsive Saturday in the driveway of a home located in the 5500 block of County Road 33 in Skipperville.
A routine traffic stop for the absence of a tag resulted in the arrest of an Abbeville woman on multiple drug charges by a Barbour County deputy. Deputy Jerad Ingram noticed a brown Jeep as he was traveling on Margaret Drive in Eufaula that had no vehicle tag so he initiated a traffic stop. The vehicle was occupied by the driver and one passenger. The driver’s information returned with no problems but the passenger had warrants on her from Henry County.

Football season is here and the upcoming campaign will kick off with games less than four weeks from now. The Barbour County High Jaguars are planning a Parents Meet/Greet the football coaches from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday August 8th at the BCHS gymnasium. All BCHS football coaches will be present to meet parents, community and BCSD employees. New head football coach Derrick Levette, who was previously the head football coach at Bullock County, takes over the Jaguar program. He replaces Daniel Powell, who has left the system. The team finished 0-10 last year.

More than 275 children under five years old have been registered so far in Barbour County to receive a free book each month through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library program in partnership with the Family Service Center Barbour. The free books are offered to all children under five in the county regardless of family income.
