Beasley wins landslide victory

Voters in Barbour County had a “picture perfect” day to go to the polls to cast their ballot in Tuesday’s General Election. With summer-like weather not being a deterrent, voting percentages were still small in the county with 38% of the voters going to the polls.

75 YEARS AGO NOVEMBER 7, 1947 Mr. B.H. Baker, Veteran’s Service Officer, Alabama State Department of Veteran’s Affairs, has recently been appointed Re-Employment Committeeman for Barbour County to aid veterans in obtaining reemployment and seniority rights to which they are entitled.

Mayor Tibbs proposes plan to commission

Eufaula Mayor Jack Tibbs presented a proposal to Barbour County Commissioners at their meeting held Monday in Clayton involving the old courthouse building in Eufaula and property adjacent to the new courthouse facility. He said he wanted to present an opportunity to commissioners on the old funeral home next to the new courthouse facility and the vacated courthouse in Eufaula. He informed commissioners that he had been in negotiations with the owners of the abandoned funeral home which he said is an eye sore in Eufaula. The property and former funeral home can be purchased, he said, for $100,000.

Alabama is a “hot bed” for the flu this year and the bug has forced some area schools to close for a few days. Barbour County schools closed last week on Thursday and Friday for virtual learning classes out of an abundance of caution and due to a high volume of flu and cold-like symptoms. The term “tripledemic” has been coined for the respiratory viruses, influenza, RSV, and COVID. Let’s all try to stay well and do all we can to prevent getting sick. ****** Talking about a night of sports - Saturday night was one of those times. Both the Auburn and Alabama games were nail biters and the World Series game when the Astros won the title kept sports fans tuned in to their devices. Both Alabama and Auburn lost in overtime but Auburn fans were even excited after losing because of the competitiveness shown on the field. Auburn has had a losing season, fired their coach but Interim Coach Cadillac Williams picked up the pace for the Tigers Saturday night.

40th Anniversary of VOCAL observed

Miriam Shehane of Clio turned a personal tragedy that brought the unthinkable to her family to one that has touched countless number of people through the years. The inception of an organization that has become a familiar acronym, VOCAL, was founded six years after that tragic day in the lives of the Shehane family.
