House of Ruth to receive funding

The House of Ruth, an agency that assists victims of domestic violence in nine counties including Barbour County, will receive additional funding through the state’s Domestic Violence Trust Fund. The Trust Fund, which was created by the Alabama Legislature in 2015, will provide additional funding to a total of 18 agencies that assist victims of domestic violence.

ADOC to hold Career Fair Feb. 23

The Alabama Department of Corrections will hold a Career Fair Thursday, February 23, at Barbour County High School, Clayton. The ADOC is holding a series of Career Fairs and Onsite Events across the state in an effort to recruit for vacant positions across the state, especially Correctional Officers.

Commission approves procedure for closing of county buildings

Barbour County commissioners passed a resolution that establishes the proper procedure for which county offices are closed “for special circumstances deemed necessary or appropriate.” County offices have been closed on several occasions recently due to inclement weather conditions. The decision by the commission chairman to allow employees to leave because of weather conditions brought concern from another commissioner.

WestRock lockout ends

Nearly 350 employees at WestRock have returned to work after they have been on lockout at the Mahrt Mill in Cottonton since October 6. The lockout ended after workers had been out of work for 117 days when an agreement was reached with the three unions and WestRock.

Inmate releases cause concerns

One inmate incarcerated in Barbour County was among the 134 inmates who were released from state prison facilities last week by the Alabama Department of Corrections. Derrick Kentrell Walker, who was incarcerated at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton on Burglar I conviction, was released under a planned massive release of inmates statewide.
