COLONELALBERT FRANKLIN SIMPSON, JR.

Colonel Albert Franklin Simpson, Jr. died on September 30, 2024. He was the only child of Dr. Albert R. Simpson of Washington, GA and Marion Grant Simpson of Comer, AL.

Funeral services were held Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 10 A.M., at St. James Episcopal Church with Rev. Neil Kaminski officiating. Burial followed in the Old Springhill Cemetery at 12 Noon with Chapman Funeral Home directing.

Colonel Simpson was born on November 2,1934 in Nashville, TN. He was a graduate of Eufaula High School, Davidson College (AB), the University of Alabama (JD), the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College. He served for thirty-six years in the Alabama National Guard, the Army Reserve, and the Regular Army, commanding a battery, a company, a battalion and a brigade, and holding staff positions in the headquarters of the Army CID Command of the United States Army, Europe, and Forces Command. Colonel Simpson served in Viet Nam and during the Persian Gulf War.

During a break in service, Colonel Simpson practiced law in Eufaula, AL, serving for several years as the City Attorney. More recently, he has engaged in growing timber and raising beef cattle on True Blue Plantation, his family property in Comer.

He was a member of St. James’ Episcopal Church and was formerly a member of the Eufaula City School Board and a trustee of The Lakeside School. He was active in the Eufaula Rotary Club, the Friends of the Carnegie Library, Trees Eufaula, the Heritage Association, the Friends of Fendall Hall and in the maintenance of the Old Springhill Cemetery.

Colonel Simpson’s surviving family includes Anne Simpson Eskew, Addison Wingfield Simpson, III, Floy Holloman Carr, Claudia Simpson-Jones, Graham Barnett (Windy) Simpson, Dr. Allison Alfred Grant (his children and grandchildren), Jeanette Grant (her children and grandchildren), Martha Grant, J. (Beverly) Grant (their children and grandchildren), Meg Grant (Mike) Ammons (their children and grandchildren. Also, Kenny and Cathy Childree, Carl and Rebecca Childree (Grant, Gabe and Gibson), Jonathan and Mary Frances Clark Pallbearers were Carl Childree, Jonathan Clark, J. Grant, Kevin Cauley, George Cochran, Earl White, Bob Dixon and Joel Smith, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: 1) The Lakeside School, Marion Grant Simpson Endowment; 2) Eufaula Heritage Association; 3) The Carnegie Library, building fund; 4) Spring Hill Cemetery (2567 Highway 82, Midway, AL 36053).
