BERNICE MILLER GRAY

Bernice Miller Gray was born on May 22, 1929 to the late Mack and Minnie Miller of Louisville, AL. She was the youngest of eight siblings, of which all have preceded her in death. She departed this life to be with the Lord on Monday, February 6, 2023 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Louisville. She was 94 years old.

The Celebration of Life was held at Zion Chapel Baptist Church in Louisville. The service was officiated by Reverend Dennis Blakely, Pastor; and Reverend Fred A. Gray gave the eulogy.

She served her church and God with pleasure as a deaconess, Sunday School Teacher for the youth, President of the Missionary Society and one of the leaders of the choir.

Her fine qualities of cooking, cleaning, and sewing made her marketable. She was employed as a domestic worker, cafeteria worker for the Barbour County School’s Lunch Program, meal server for the Clio Senior Citizen Center, and a poll worker for the Barbour County Board of Elections.

During Bernice’s spare time, she was a gardener of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Zinnias, Mums and Periwinkles, just to name a few, were her favorites. She taught her daughters how to can and freeze fresh fruits and vegetables, and taught her younger daughter how to quilt and sew. The beauty of life skills means you have God given talent and craft that no one can take from you!

Bernice was preceded in death by her husband,

Clyde Gray, one son, Leon Gray, one grandson Brett Crossley and all of her siblings.

She leaves to cherish her memories three children, Helen G. (Rev. T.E.) Crossley, James H. (Helen) Gray, and Gwendolyn G. (Calvin L. Jr.) Green; ten grandchildren Jamelia Hayes, Cavetta Green, Jameice Gray, Patrick “Jarvis” (Brittany) Gray, Calvin L. Green, III, James H. Gray, Jr, Jeremy Gray, Iris Gray, Johnathan Gray, and Shasta McGriff, one great grandson Johnathan Hayes and a host of special nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The Flower Bearers were Terri Gray, Jameice Gray, Iris Gray, Irene Hunter, Jamelia Hayes, Cavetta Green, Lisa Robinson and Mamie Sue Gray.
